Letting Go of Your Identity
“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” ― Marcus Aurelius
You have an idea of who you think you are. ”This is who I am”, you say firmly to your partner. It feels true and real and solid so of course it must be who you are. You hold on to your identity, to the idea of who you are, tightly. Tightly as hell. You might even parade around telling everyone that you are exactly like this. ”I have always been like this” you declare. I get it. I did too. (I do too some days when I’ve lost my shit. Yes, I’m human too).
We mistakenly believe that our identity is all we’ve got. If we are not who we believe we are then who the F are we? The thought of ditching my identity scared the crap out of me. Any of my students feel the same way when we start working together. They so much resist the idea of letting go of their precious personality traits. ”But this is who I am!!!!”, they say with tears (and fear) in their eyes. ”I can’t just let all that I am go”.
You can. You must.
The only reason we ever suffer is when we hold on to the illusion of a Self. When we believe the little voice of the Ego and we take every word as the absolute truth of who we are being. We struggle endlessly when we hold on to the idea of who we think we are and we freak out at the thought of letting go of all preconceived ideas of who we are and who we need to be.
What scares us the most is the fear that if we let go of who we are that we will wander the earth lost and confused. With no clear direction or purpose. We fear letting go of the control because we believe that if we don’t dictate and demand how life should end up it might all go to hell.
Nothing will be done. We won’t accomplish anything. We won’t work hard enough and our goals will never be reached.
We refuse to let go of who we think we are.
What if you’re wrong? What if who you think you are and who you think you must be is what is actually in the way of all of your dreams and wishes to come true. What if your little identity, that you carrying around and hold onto dearly, is the thing that stands in the way and holds you back? What if dropping your identity is the solution to every single problem?
Because it is.
There is something else beneath your identity. And it’s nothing out of the ordinary. If you’ve been believing that you needed your identity to hold you together and work hard in life, hustle and grind and that by doing so you’d only get stuff done then you’re in for a treat. Because what waits for you under the cloak of identity is pure, raw creative power that once unleashed will take your breath away.
It’s the power of creation and its tremendous energy will carry you wherever you wanna go. It has always been there, waiting for you to notice. Hey! It says. ”I’ve been waiting for you to wake up. It’s me. Your old ancient friend. The big-bang kinda friend and if I managed to blow up the whole universe in a few seconds I think I can help you too. What can I do for you, today?”
And here you’ve been hustling and working your ass off for years. Trying so hard to figure it all out and doing, doing, doing. All this time exhausting yourself to the point of burnout when you had the universal intelligence at your fingertips at any moment.
Because that’s what is waiting for you when you let go of your identity. Letting go of who you think you are is the secret password that opens the door to the infinite intelligence. It’s the key to enter the kingdom of heaven.
”The transformation that results from seeing this is breathtaking.” -Dimond, Clare.
Yes, it will not only take your breath away but it will blow your mind. This is who you are. This is who you’ve been all this time. This BEING.
You’ve been caught up in the illusion of your identity. Your identity is nothing more than a mumbo jumbo of thoughts that in every moment creates this little identity. Without these ”identity thoughts”, you wouldn’t BE who you think you are.
You are believing you are these thoughts that tell you who you are. Do you get that? The same second that you stop taking your identity-thoughts seriously, you are free. Free to roam the world in any shape or form. Really. The only reason why you are attached to your identity is because you’ve been believing your thoughts. Your thoughts have been creating your experience of who you think you are. Always. Let me encourage you to be curious about who you are beneath all the thinking.
Beneath the idea of your identity, what is there? Just an empty void where you are not taking action? A passive, lazy thing with zero ambition?
…or something else?
Are you willing to let go of old beliefs of who you are? I am a perfectionist. I am an introvert. I am a loser. I am a survivor. I am a high-achiever….or whatever you identify as, every single day.
Are you willing to just for a tiny moment let go of your identity?
It’s not as hard as you think (I heard you there ”I can’t let go of who I am just like that!!!”). It really isn’t complicated. Just see if you can stop taking yourself so seriously and notice if anything else comes through.
It might surprise you. The universe always does.
